Naturalized yards better for environment than monocultures, says environmental group executive director

The executive director of the York Region Environmental Alliance suggests homeowners should consider abandoning “cookie cutter” lawns that are “vast” and “useless” and allow their yards to become naturalized as a haven for birds, bees and butterflies. Gloria Marsh says monoculture lawns are high-maintenance and benefit no one. The region has imposed water restrictions during this summer’s drought to ensure there are adequate drinking water reserves and sufficient water for fire protection. The region sees limited water use as beneficial in not picking up pollutants when entering storm sewers.
