Location for permanent sports stadium in Halifax generates debate

Stadium should not be on common land, group says

A debate is brewing in Halifax about where major sporting events should and should not be played in the city. The city’s Wanderers Grounds have served as the venue for university and amateur soccer and rugby games, and could be a key site for Soccer Nova Scotia’s provincial championships this summer, Wanderers president Derek Martin says. But, opposition has come from the Friends of the Halifax Common, whose president David Garrett says he is against any type of stadium being situated on common land. A pop-up stadium at Wanderers Grounds was meant as a temporary measure to gauge the viability of a permanent facility. Garrett says a permanent stadium needs to be located elsewhere in a non-parkland setting with more land.
