Keep a thin layer of leaves on your lawn this fall to provide free mulch, fertilizer

Don’t rake all of your fallen leaves this fall. Instead, leave a thin layer behind, suggests the Nature Conservancy of Canada. The small amount of leaves will naturally decompose and provide mulch and fertilizer for the soil, the agency says. Leaving a thick layer of leaves on the ground will have a detrimental effect, however, and may suffocate the lawn.
