Here’s why so many trees were toppled in Ottawa during hurricane-like weekend storm
Wind gusts reached upwards of 120 kph

Last weekend’s storm that produced hurricane-strength winds gusting upwards of 120 kilometres per hour damaged and uprooted thousands of trees in the Ottawa area. The extent of the damage left many to wonder how so many trees succumbed to the storm. According to a Tree Canada arborist, trees can sustain a certain amount of wind and will flex accordingly. However, he added, trees cannot absorb and dissipate the energy presented by the weekend’s sustained and gusty wind levels.
