Hemlock tree in Nova Scotia predates John Cabot’s arrival in North America
Tree's age confirmed at 532 years old

A Nova Scotia hemlock tree lays claim to being the oldest tree in the Maritime provinces, and is so old that it began growing eight years before explorer John Cabot arrived in North America. The 532-year-old tree is growing northwest of Hubbards, near the South Panuke Wilderness Area. Samples taken from the tree during the summer have confirmed its age.
