Grande Prairie wants assurance that proposed sportsplex expansion is warranted

County doesn't want to fund underutilized facilities

February 14, 2022  By Turf & Rec

The County of Grande Prairie, Alta. wants to be sure an existing soccer field at a local sportsplex and proposed expansions for the facility will be fully utilized before committing to help fund any augmentation.

The county’s reeve says the existing soccer field has been underutilized by the local soccer association, and wants to be assured the proposal for a standalone, full-sized indoor soccer field and volleyball court is warranted before pouring money into it.

Although the county supports the expansion concept in principle, it wishes more information before proceeding with funding. The matter is being sent to the county’s recreation committee to gauge potential commitment from the region and local user groups.

Reeve Leanne Beaupre said the county doesn’t wish to help fund a facility that will see little use, and seeks to obtain more information to rationalize the expansion.

It’s been determined there is sufficient space to extend the soccer field to the facility’s west and to house a multi-court fieldhouse to the north.
