Emerald ash borer can survive much colder temperatures than earlier thought: research

Researchers have learned the invasive emerald ash borer can withstand much colder winter temperatures than previously conjectured. The study at the Great Lakes Forestry Centre was undertaken after it was learned many insects survived a polar vortex event in Winnipeg with temperatures dropping to almost minus 50 degrees Celsius. Research suggests the ash borer is able to adapt to its immediate climate, as some insects died in southern Ontario at temperatures of about minus 28 degrees while others survived under much harsher conditions in Winnipeg.
