Edmonton’s sports fields, green spaces likely to be taller, weedier this summer

Maintenance costs, city growth attributed to less frequency in mowing

May 28, 2024  By Turf & Rec

The sight of dandelions and tall grass on city boulevards in Edmonton is likely to remain throughout the summer.

Coun. Andrew Knack stated the city’s turf maintenance regime will probably be on par with last year’s standards, but he added the municipality will be more upfront with residents about it.

Maintenance crews have been unable to keep up standards noted on the city’s website due to Edmonton’s growth. The website states sports fields are to be mowed within seven days while other green spaces are to be cut within 10 to 14 days. Knack said premier sports fields are being maintained within eight days while other green spaces are to be mowed within 10 to 18 days.

He acknowledged that 18 days is too long a stretch without maintenance, and suggested 14 days should be targeted. More frequent mowing adds to the city’s costs, he said, but added the matter will be addressed again in the fall.
