Dozens of Quebec municipalities ready to take on Dandelion Challenge

Program aims to boost declining pollinator populations

May 10, 2023  By Turf & Rec

Several Quebec municipalities will be participating again this year in the Dandelion Challenge, a program that encourages the growth of pollinator populations.

Unlike the No Mow May campaign, which has been adopted by many Ontario municipalities, the starting times for the Dandelion Challenge will be staggered, depending on the municipality. Some municipalities may not begin the program until the start of June.

The program asks residents to wait at least two weeks after dandelions appear before mowing their lawns, giving pollinators a window of opportunity to collect nectar and pollen before the weeds become established again.

The Quebec City founders of the program say the extinction rate of pollinators is higher than normal, adding a delayed start to lawn mowing will help.
