Agency says excess salt gets into sensitive waterways, negatively affecting plants and animals

The use of salt to melt ice from parking lots, sidewalks and roads can negatively affect freshwater plants and animals, a spokesperson from World Wildlife Fund Canada says. Elizabeth Hendriks, vice-president of freshwater with WWF Canada, says salt doesn’t need to be used in excess to melt ice and can help waterways from becoming too salt-saturated.
