Brampton, Ont. initiating weed control plan while still maintaining biodiversity

Maintenance budget has increased by 22 per cent

The City of Brampton, Ont. has increased its outdoor maintenance budget by 22 per cent with an injection of cash and maintenance sessions that have doubled since last year.

The city has also established a plant task force that will target weed and dandelion maintenance. The goal, however, is not to outright eliminate the weeds but to encourage biodiversity of wildlife in the municipality.

Brampton claims dandelions, weeds and tall grasses will help support local pollinators.

The city is encouraging those who maintain their own properties to mow lawns and weeds at three inches in height, remove flower heads before they go to seed, mulch tree and shrub beds to prevent weed growth, and apply a weeding tool when removing plants.

A maintenance tracker is being released this month to allow residents to monitor when crews are in their neighbourhoods doing maintenance.
