The artificial turf surface at Edmonton’s Commonwealth Stadium will have to go if the city is to pursue its bid to host the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Although FIFA’s chief competitions and events officer was impressed by Edmonton’s fan support at the Canadian men’s national team’s recent wins over Costa Rica and Mexico, he said the World Cup is played on natural grass and Commonwealth Stadium would have to change its playing surface to win its hosting bid.
