Alberta city to consider year-round ban on lawn and garden watering

Proposal pitched to amend bylaw to go beyond seasonal ban

March 29, 2023  By Turf & Rec

A year-round ban on lawn watering during the daytime has been proposed for St. Albert, Alta.

If passed, violation of the amended water conservation bylaw could result in a $100 fine. The existing bylaw was passed in 2015 and enacted three years later. Its purpose is to reduce the amount of water used for lawn, garden and tree irrigation during certain times of the year.

The existing bylaw forbids lawn watering to be conducted between 9 a.m. and 7 p.m. from May 1 to Oct. 31. The proposed amendment is to have watering banned all year-round.

Exceptions to the rule would be allowed, such as the ability to water in new sod.
